Compress an Image to Under 100 KB
This is the limit that appears more than any other: examination boards, job portals and government application forms settle on 100 KB with striking consistency. It is also a comfortable target, which is why the usual reason people fail it is dimensional rather than about compression.

Why people miss a limit this generous
A modern phone photograph is several megabytes because it is several thousand pixels wide. Asked to fit 100 KB at those dimensions, a compressor has to degrade the image severely — and the result looks poor while the file is still too large.
Reduce the dimensions to what the form asks for, and the same 100 KB becomes ample. The compressor is then describing far fewer pixels with the same budget, and the result is usually indistinguishable from the original at the size it will be displayed.
