Which tool you actually need
The four operations sound similar and do different things. Compressing keeps the dimensions and discards detail the eye is poor at noticing. Resizing changes the dimensions themselves, which is where the largest savings live — an image shown at 800 pixels but stored at 4000 carries twenty-five times the data it needs.
Converting changes the format, which matters because the same picture can be several times larger as a PNG than as a WebP. Cropping changes the shape and the framing, and is the only one of the four that decides what stays in the frame.
Most real jobs are two of these in order: resize first, then compress. Doing only the second is the most common reason people are disappointed by how little they saved.
Choosing a format
WebP is the right default for anything going on the web. It beats JPEG by roughly a quarter to a third at matched quality, supports transparency, and every current browser has read it since 2020.
PNG is for logos, icons, diagrams and screenshots containing text, where lossless output matters and hard edges would smear under lossy compression. JPEG is for maximum compatibility — email clients and older software that will not open anything newer.
Why nothing is uploaded
Image editing is arithmetic on pixels, and a browser has been able to do that at full speed for years. Sending the file to a server first adds an upload, a queue and a download, and it puts a copy of your photograph on a machine you do not control.
Because there is no server paying for bandwidth here, there is also no reason to impose the file-size caps, daily quotas and watermarks that fund the alternatives.

Are these image tools really free?
Yes, with no account, quota or watermark. The processing runs on your device rather than a server, so there is no bandwidth bill to recover — which is why the free tier can stay free rather than being a trial.
Do my photos get uploaded?
No. Every tool here works inside the browser tab, and you can confirm it in the browser's Network tab — nothing is transmitted while a file is processed.
Should I compress or resize?
Resize first, then compress. Dimensions dominate file size: halving the width and height removes three quarters of the pixels before any quality setting is chosen. Compressing an oversized image spends quality on pixels you are about to discard.
What quality setting should I use?
Around 80 for photographs, where the difference is invisible at normal viewing sizes. 85 or higher for anything containing text, because the eye is unusually good at spotting distortion around letterforms.
Is there a file size limit?
No imposed limit. The practical ceiling is your device's memory, so a laptop handles far larger files than a phone. Nothing is capped for commercial reasons.
Can I process a whole folder at once?
Yes. Add the entire selection, apply one setting to all of them, and download the results as a ZIP. Sort photographs and screenshots into separate batches, since a setting that suits one will smear the other.
